Small dietary changes and regular eye check-ups could save your sight

To raise awareness of Macular Degeneration this Macular Degeneration Awareness Week (24-30 May), Specsavers has teamed up with leading dietician and nutritionist, Susie Burrell.

Susie has channelled her 15 years’ worth of experience into a healthy MD busting ‘Bliss Balls for your Eye Balls’ recipe that utilises ingredients rich in a number of vitamins, such as Vit A and Vit E, along with a host of antioxidants that are proven to be good for the eyes and are key in the battle against MD.

“I’ve worn glasses and contact lenses for a number of years, as have many of my family members, and MD is always something that I have been very wary of. There are a number of simple steps that people can take to ensure they reduce the risk of developing MD; including small dietary changes like eating more leafy greens, brightly coloured fruits, oily fish and nuts and seeds which can have a big impact on the health of your eyes. Regular eye check-ups are also vital to catching MD and other issues early,” comments Susie.

Macular Degeneration

MD is relatively simple to detect with a macula exam and the use of Digital Retinal Photography (DRP) that helps optometrists detect the early signs of MD. DRP is offered free of charge at all Specsavers stores as part of every standard eye test, and uses sophisticated equipment to produce a high resolution photograph of the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels.

Whilst there is currently no cure, there are a number of treatment options that can potentially stem the progress of the disease but it’s essential to catch it early and it’s imperative for people to get their eyes tested every two years.

Makes 12

Ingredients

  • 175g mixed nut/seed spread
  • Approx 10 Dates
  • 1/2 Cup dried blueberries
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/3 cup pepitas
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
  • Coconut for rolling

    Method

    • 1. Place all ingredients (excluding coconut) in a food processor and blend to combine.
    • 2. Using a tablespoon, roll into balls.
    • 3. Roll in coconut then place in the fridge for up to an hour to firm up.
     

    Regular eye examinations and diet are the best methods for stopping Macular Degeneration early.
