Right from birth a baby's eye movements show that they are collecting visual information from their surroundings, but in the early days they are unable to focus much further away than 30 cms. At about a month they can look at the boundaries of close objects, and a month later finer detail on those objects. There are still many questions about how much and how far infants can see - much of what we know comes from observing how they respond to objects and faces.  What is clear is that the development of the eyes and binocular vision - where the view from each eye is combined and interpreted perfectly by the brain - does not finish developing until the child is several years old. Therefore regular check-ups at the optometrist are a vital part of protecting your children's health.
