How To Talk to Your Loved One About Hearing Aids

Talking to a loved one about getting hearing aids fitted can be challenging. At Specsavers, we understand how important hearing is to connect with family and friends. That’s why we’ve shared some tips below on how to approach this conversation delicately.

How common is hearing loss?

Hearing loss may be more common than you think! One in six Australian adults and one in five adults in New Zealand experience some form of hearing loss. However, unfortunately very few do anything about it.

Tips to talking to your loved one about hearing aids:

  • Shift their perspective:

Try making a palatable comparison to your loved one. For example, if they were having issues with their vision, they would have their eyes checked and perhaps wear prescription glasses. Hearing aids can be viewed similarly – essentially a tool to enhance your loved one’s hearing.

If your loved one is feeling a little self‑conscious about getting hearing aids, remind them that everybody in the room will realise if they keep asking others to repeat themselves or if they begin to disengage from conversations. However, not many people will be looking at their ears, in fact most won’t even realise it’s there!

  • Acknowledge that it takes time to act:

It takes a long time for individuals to address their hearing loss and even longer for them to do something about it and receive the care they deserve. We know that our hearing continues to deteriorate as we age (among other factors!) and untreated hearing loss could lead to a ripple effect of other problems.

  • Most importantly, be compassionate:

It’s important to remember that there is a lot to process when it comes to hearing loss and your loved one may require you to be extra understanding. Continue to communicate how you’re feeling with them and never be afraid to reach out to an expert for support.

Our team of audiology professionals are here to support you throughout your journey to better hearing.
